As part of its efforts to put an end to the issue of travelling out of Nigeria with fake immunisation cards popularly known as Yellow Cards, the Federal Ministry of Health has introduced electronic yellow card that are only machine readable,
In an exclusive interaction with reliable ministry sources at the ministry in Abuja one of the machines was shown to African Business Travel News ( ABTN)
The sources said the move is to deal the last blow on activities of yellow card syndicates which had caused great embarrassments to many Nigerian travellers and the nation at large particularly in South Africa.
The machine which looks similar to a Point of Sales (POS) machine, the sources assured would be deployed to airlines’ check-in- Counters where any fake yellow card would be detected.
The source explained that all what needed to be done is typing the serial number on the card into the machine which would bring out every data required including where and date the card was obtained. The nurse or medical officer who administered the vaccine on the passenger, the type of inoculation and the expiring date of the immunisation.
“This is because there is a new eYellow Card which has enhanced security features including a QR (bar) code which if scanned displays the details of the bearer /owner of the card, provided due process was followed in getting it from Port Health,” the source said.
The system which was introduced last year was successfully tested during the last year Hajj Operations, would become fully operational by April 1, 2019 at every border post in the country.
