In continuation of its unbiased and determined efforts to rid Nigerian airports of corrupt officials, Management of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has apprehended and suspended some officials caught extorting a passenger at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, ( MMIA) Lagos.
The officials, who are staff of Aviation Security and Customer Service departments of the Authority were immediately suspended, while the On Duty Card of their accomplice from the Nigeria Immigration Service has been withdrawn.
A statement by the spokesperson of FAAN, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu said,
“This action was taken to serve as deterrent to other bad eggs who are bent on tarnishing the image of the nation in the system.”
the surveillance and monitoring task force deployed by the the management of Federal airports authority of Nigeria ( FAAN) to checkmate activities of the undesirable elements, has arrested three officials of border control security agencies attached to Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos.
African Business Travel News (ABTN) learnt that the three airport officials were arrested in the departure level of the international airport while they conspired to extort a first time passenger (Name withheld) to the tune of about One hundred and fifty thousand naira only (N150,000) which was transferred into bank accounts of one of the accomplices.
The three suspects were immediately arrested and their On Duty Cards (ODC) withdrawn. While FAAN immediately placed its personnel involved in the alleged extortion on suspicion, the official of the Immigration Service was handed over to his agency for further Investigation and discipline.
It would be recalled that the managing director of FAAN, Capt Rabiu Yadudu has vowed that the airport authority would leave no stone unturned to rid airports under it control of touts and miscreants.
About three weeks ago an official of Arik airline was equally placed on indefinite suspension when she was arrested for extortion at the General Aviation Terminal ( GAT) of the Lagos airport.
The current effort by FAAN to curb Lagos airport of unlawful practices is a welcome development. It is equally important that FAAN improves the condition of the airport that is MMIA which air conditioners have stopped working. Please remind captain Yadudu that the Lagos international environment is the worst compared to other airports in the world. If it is possible that the cctv could be deployed to fight corruption against officials that do excessive acts so also should the maintenance of the airport be taken seriously.
