As the yuletide season approaches with accompanying surge in air passenger traffic at the nation’s airports, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Alhaji Kabir Yusuf Mohammed iap has warned all airport officials especially border control security personnel against extortion of passengers.
Mohammed warned that anyone caught engaing in the disgraceful act of extorting passengers or any airport user, would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
The Chief Executive revealed that the management of FAAN has engaged the services of “mystery staff” who will take note of the activities of staff at the airports and report same to management.
He made this known during the One-day sensitization programme on ACI Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Initiative held at the Conference room of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMA) recently..
The initiative was ,organised by the Directorate of Airport Operations.
The Chief Executive at FAAN who expressed displeasure at the poor reputation Murtala Muhammed International Airport has garnered overtime as a result of extortion of passengers, warned that anyone caught in such act this Yuletide season will face disciplinary consequences.
He said that travellers are being discouraged from flying through the Lagos international terminal because of extortion.
The Managing Director of FAAN therefore challenged representatives of all the government agencies : Nigeia Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Agriculture Quarantine Service (NAQS), Aviation Security (AVSEC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and others operating at Nigerian airports to be ethically responsible while discharging their dutoes.
He also reminded everyone that the Central circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed at every corner crany of the airports have been upgraded and functioning optimally.
He warned that anyone caught engaging in any act that would bring FAAN into disrepute would not be spared from facing appropriate sanctions.
The MD/CE of FAAN, however, encouraged everyone to work towards improving on the reputation of the airport and the country at large by being courteous and respectful to the travelling public alwsys
Mohammed who also preached the message of collaboration among the agencies in the airports , said, “We are one airport and if there is any wrongdoing , people don’t bother to know which agency did the wrong. They only know the airport where they were wronged.”
.The ACI ASQ sensitization event also had an interactive session where participants expressed their various concerns and also gave positive suggestions on how the image of the airport can be improved upon.
