A security breach has been reported at the apron of Murtala Muhammed Airport Domestic Terminal Two (MMA2) Lagos, operated by Bi- Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL).
The alleged security breach was made known by United Nigeria Airlines in a statement by its Head, Corporate Communications, Achilleus-Chud Uchegbu.
Uchegbu said a man suspected to be a stowaway was on Sunday morning found in one of the airline’s airplanes securely parked at the terminal’s apron the previous night.
He explained that the man’s presence in the aircraft was noticed during its preflight inspection and was subsequently arrested and handed over to security operatives for interrogations.
“During preflight inspection this morning, Sunday, a stowaway was found in one of our aircraft parked at MMA2 Ikeja. The middle-aged man, who looked unkempt and is suspected to be unconscious, was arrested and taken in for interrogation,” Uchegbu said.
The airline spokesman explained further: ‘The aircraft last operated Abuja-Lagos at 7.30pm on September 3, 2022 and was securely parked at the apron following post flight inspection. FAAN AVSEC and Bicourtney security services are on ground and investigation has opened into this security breach at MMa2.”
The airline which however regretted that the security breach may affect its scheduled flights on some routes the affected aircraft has been scheduled because of its withdraw for further investigation, has appealed to its numerous passengers for understanding.
“The affected aircraft is being screened and prepared for service in accordance with United Nigeria Airlines strict security and operating standards.
“Meanwhile, the development will result in rescheduling of some flights to accommodate the investigations.
We regret the delay this incident will cause our esteemed customers whose scheduled flight will be affected. United Nigeria Airlines remains absolutely committed to your safety at all times.”
As at time of filling this report, BASL operators of the terminal is yet to make a statement on the incident.
