Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has appealed to host communities around airports in the country to desist from indescriminate bush burning around aviation facilities within their communities.
FAAN made the appeal following a bush fire incident reported around Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri today.
“The Authority will like to appeal to host communities around airports to please desist from burning bushes around the airports as this act is capable of jeopardizing safety of flight operations because of the prevailing weather condition in the country,” said a statement from FAAN.
The statement signed by the spokesperson at FAAN, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu informing airlines and others stakeholders in the Owerri Airport of the incident added, ” Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) wishes to inform airline operators and other airport users that a bush fire incident has been reported at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri.
She however, said the fire incident didn’t affect any facility in the airport or flight operations at the airport, even as she added that operatives of the Air Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS) were on ground curtailing the fire.
“However, the incident did not affect flight operations as normal flight operations continues unhindered,” Yakubu said.
It would be recalled that similar wildlife incidents occurred around Port Harcourt and Lagos International Airports last month.
