The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA) operatives at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos Command made a total number of 22 interception/seizures producing 1578. 682 kilogrammes of substances which tested positive for illicit drugs and 33 arrests were made in the first six months of 2020.
The suspects were 26 males and seven (7) females.
Data obtained by African Business Travel News (ABTN) from the Lagos Airport command of the anti-narcotics agency, showed that between January and March, a total of 272.532 kgs of seizures were made from 17 cases leading to the arrest of 26 suspects. (20) males and six female).
From April to June 2020 which was the period the nation’s gateway airport was shutdown to scheduled commercial flight operations, a total of five (5) seizures and seven (7) arrests Six (6) males and one (1) female were made at the cargo terminal of the Lagos Airport.
The breakdown of the seizures and arrests were as follows:
In the first quarter, 5.580kgs of cannabis, 25.053kg of cocaine, 16.811kg of Ephedrine, 158.600kg of Tramadol, 24.488kg of Nitrazepam tablets and 42.kg of Diazepam injections were intercepted at the airport.
In the second quarter, April to June, the period the nation’s gateway airport was shutdown to scheduled commercial flight operations, a total of five (5) seizures and seven (7) arrests Six (6) males and one (1) female were made at the cargo terminal of the Lagos Airport.
For the seizures during the second quarter, while there was no single interception/ Seizure was made in the month of April, the months of May and June witnessed the interception/ seizures of 1276.400kg of cannabis and 3.000kg of Ephedrine and 25.750kg of cannabis respectively; making a total of 1306.150kg of illicit drugs seized at the cargo terminal.
