As part of efforts to address the menace of flight cancellations and delays in Nigeria, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo has directed the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to begin weekly compilation and publication of all airlines that got involved in the flight disruptions.
He further directed that the reasons or causes of the delay or cancellation as well as actions taken to the issue should be included in the published reports.
Keyamo gave the directive on Saturday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at BON Hotel, GRA Ikeja Lagos.
The Minister said this would allow the public to know the reasons for their delays or cancellations and what actions have been taken to prevent reoccurrence.
Keyamo who agreed that the blames for most delays and cancellations shouldn’t be put solely at the doorstep of airline operators, noted that flight it is a phenomenon that happens in the aviation industry all over the world.
The Minister who lamented that he is disturbed by the volume of complaints he received daily as a result of flight delays and cancellation in the country, however said with this publication in place every week, stakeholders will know where the problems are.
He therefore directed that NCAA should open a website where everyone will see and know the causes of all delays or cancellations within a week and the action taken to address them.
Minister who directed that an online platform should be opened for the purpose, added that the publication should reflect reasons for delays and cancellations so that passengers would know why their flights are delayed or cancelled.
I have listened to the airlines on some of the challenges they have which truly cause flight delays and cancellations like bad weather, infrastructure challenges, and others. I agree that there are issues, but these problems cannot just be attributed to bad weather. Bad weather does not happen on every flight..” He said.
He added, “DG CAA, I want you to begin compilation and publication in-house of flight delays and cancellations and bad treatment meted out to airlines and let people see the reasons why their flights are delayed.”
