FAAN to close Enugu Airport runway for reconstruction

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has notified stakeholders in air transportation in Nigeria and beyond, of  intention to close the runway at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu  for reconstruction.

In a statement by the spokesperson at FAAN, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, the closure would take effect from 00:00 hours on August, 24 2019.

“FAAN hereby notifies airlines, passengers and all other stakeholders that effective 00:00 on 24th August, 2019, the runway at Akanu Ibiam International Airport  in Enugu  will be closed for major repairs and works on the airfield,” said the  statement.

Yakubu further informed that FAAN has taken the decision to close the runway to enable it resolve safety and security issues at the international airport.

The airport authority however said a date for the reopening would be made public soon.

“This move is aimed at resolving  the existing Safety/Security  concerns to flight  operations. A date to reopen the runway will be  communicated in due course,” FAAN said.

It would be recalled that safety on the Enugu international airport runway has in the last few years become an issue of serious concerns to the nation when airlines and passengers started complaining about the state of the infrastructure

FAAN while taking up the complaints insisted that the runway has to go through a total reconstruction which would witness an extension of its length.

A situation which has caused the relocation of a major market and some communication equipments from the airport.
