The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service has recorded another productive month in its revenue collection at the Lagos international airport terminal with the sum of One Billion, Nine Hundred and Fifty Nine Million, Four Hundred and Seventy one Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty Naira and Nineteen Kobo (₦1,959,471,75750.19) collected in November, 2022.
In a statement e-signed by Command’s spokesperson, Juliana Destiny Tomo, a Superintendent of Customs, and made available to African Business Travel News (ABTN) on behalf of the Customs Area Controller, (MMIA) Ikeja-Lagos, Comptroller Malami Gidado, the command recorded a significant increase of Three Hundred and Fifty Million, Five Hundred and Thirty Five Thousand, Seventy Six Naira and Twenty Four kobo (₦350,535,076.24) over its collection for the month of October, 2022.
“In this November review, the Command recorded a significant increase of Three Hundred and Fifty Million, Five Hundred and Thirty Five Thousand, Seventy Six Naira and Twenty Four kobo (₦350,535,076.24) only, in the revenue collected compared to that of October, 2022,” the statement said.
Also within one hundred days, the Command collected the sum of Seven billion, eighteen million, Seven hundred and forty two thousand, Four hundred and Fifty Five naira and Twenty Eight kobo (₦7,018,742,455.28) only, as against The sum of Six billion, Seven hundred and sixty three million, Nine hundred and Seventy nine thousand, Two hundred and Seventy Naira and Sixty Two kobo (₦6,763,979, 270.62) only, the revenue collected within the same period in 2021.
After taking over the mantle of leadership of the Command by Gidado, there has been a steady record of greater success in the statutory mandate of the border control agency at the airport; a feat which made one of the MMIA, Nigeria Customs Service stakeholders to honour Comptroller Malami Gidado with the “EXCELLENCE IN DILIGENCE MERIT AWARD” recently.
In pursuance of the Nigeria Customs Service mandate which includes Interception of contrabands, examination of travelers and their baggage, cargo and mails; assessment and collection of Customs duty and other statutory taxes on goods and services as well as protecting businesses against illegal trade malpractices with the application of extant laws such as Sections 150 and 161 of the Customs and Excise Management Act CAP C45 Law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004 (CEMA CAP C45 LFN 2004) for the smooth running of the command,” Tomo added, “Comptroller Malami Gidado, the CAC, Murtala Muhammed International Airport Command, has recorded greater successes through a “Seamless Clearance Procedure” of passengers’ accompanied and unaccompanied baggage.
The CAC has however enjoined sister border control agencies at the Lagos Airport to collaborate with the Nigeria Customs Service to ensure blockage of all possible avenues that may result in revenue leakages.
The CAC has also reiterated the assurance of good travel experience and friendlier clearance procedure of shipment for all voluntary compliance persons.
Gidado affirmed that there has been a positive difference in the integrity of passengers’ declaration of goods in the preceding Month (November 2022) under review.
