The Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has resolved to engage concessionaires to take over operations at access gate revenue points across the 22 Federal Airports in Nigeria.
This was communicated in a statement by the Special Adviser On Media and Communications to the Honourable Minister, Tunde Moshood.
According to the minister’s spokesperson, “the Ministry has resolved to engage concessionaires in order to introduce a fully automated or electronic system at all access gates at our airports in order to fully and eventually eliminate cash payments.”
Moshood explained that the Minister gave the directive in his office in Abuja on Tuesday March 10, 2026, at a meeting with senior officials of the ministry and officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
According to Moshood, “After reviewing the initial implementation and the operational challenges observed, the following decisions were reached:
“The Ministry has resolved to engage concessionaires in order to introduce a fully automated or electronic system at all access gates at our airports in order to fully and eventually eliminate cash payments.
“In the meantime, a hybrid payment system that accommodates both cash and card payments will resume at all airport access gates with effect from Friday, March 13, 2026.”
The statement added that motorists who already popossess FAAN Go Cashless Cards may continue to use their until further notice.
It also affirmed that other electronic payment options, including Point of Sales (POS) terminals and other approved digital channels, will also remain available.
It would be recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR directed the suspension of the full cashless Access Gate payment system on March 2, 2026 because of the traffic gridlock it created at Abuja and Lagos Airports.
Members of the public and road users are therefore encouraged to obtain and use the FAAN Go Cashless Card as the Authority continues to enhance and fully optimise the cashless payment system.
This directive restores the previous access gate payment arrangement whilst the Ministry continues to work on the fully automated or electronic system.
