As the indefinite nationwide strike proposed by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on minimum wage, begins on Monday, June 3 2024, the four labour unions in the aviation industry in Nigeria have directed their members in domestic airport terminals across the country to join the strike on Monday June 3, 2024 by 0000 hours GMT Nigerian standard time, while those at international terminals will join at the same time on Tuesday June 4, 2024.
The directive was contained in a statement jointly signed by the General Secretary of the the four unions who are affiliated to the NLC and TUC.
The statement headlined, “Notice of Indefinite Strike” which was made available to African Business Travel News (ABTNEWS) was signed by Comrade Ochema Aba, General Secretary, National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE); Comrade AbdulRazaq Seidu, General Secretary of Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP); Deputy General Secretary, Air Transport Service Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Comrade Frances Akinjole and General Secretary, National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), Comrade Olayinka Abioye.
The statement which read in part, stated: “In compliance with the directives from our Labour centers- Nigeria Labour Congress NLC and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) – we hereby inform the general public, aviation services providers, airline operators, aviation businesses and all aviation workers nationwide that starting from 0000 hours on June 3, 2024, all services at Nigerian airports shall be fully withdrawn till further notice. ”
However, in recognition of the fact that some international flights coming to Nigeria are already airborne and are expected to arrive on Monday morning, the unions therefore directed their members at international terminals to remain on the duty posts till 0000 hours on Tuesday June 4, 2024.
“Being not oblivious of the fact that many international flights to Nigeria are already airborne, the strike action will commence at international terminals on Tuesday 4th of June, 2024,” the statement added.
The unions therefore warned all the members against the consequences of noncompliance with the directive from the labour centers.
