COVID-19: Nigerian community donates N1.5m, food items to Botswana govt, vulnerable members

To support efforts of the government of their host country at containing the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), and ameliorate the effects of lockdown  on their vulnerable fellow compatriots, Nigerian community in the Republic of Botswana has donated 50,000.00 Pula (about (N1, 500,000.00) in cash, to  a Relief Funds Account set up by the government to fight  COVID-19 in the country

The donations were disclosed to African Business Travel News (ABTN) by the General Secretary of the Nigerian community in Republic of Botswana,  Mr. Sylvester O. Omotosho

Omotosho informed our correspondent through a WhatsApp message that the Nigerian community  in acknowledgement of the laudable efforts and giant strands made so far by the government of Botswana at fighting COVID-19, decided to contribute 50,000.00 Pula (about N1.5million) to the Relief Funds Account set up by the government realise the goal.

He stated that foods items worth thousands of  Pula were also donated towards the government programme and to vulnerable members of Nigerian community in the country.

“government acknowledgement of the laudable efforts and giant strides made so far by the governments of the Republic of Botswana in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, which has ravaged the health and economic fabric of not only Botswana, but the global community, the Nigeria Community in Botswana decided to support their host government and the great people of Botswana in this noble course.

“It is in this regard and communal spirit that we contributed the sum of P50,000.00 into the COVID-19 Relief Funds Account set up by our host government and also donated the following food as well as other “household items:

Other items donated by the Nigerian community to the relief fund  included, 120 bags of Rice, 120 bags of Maize Meals,120 bags of Mabele,120 bags of macaroni, 120 packs of sugar, 120 bottles of vegetable oil, 120 pieces of can beans, 240 pieces of tissue papers.

Realising that some Nigerians living in the Southern African country are not financially strong enough to withstand the effects of the lockdown,  Omotosho said, “The community also donated food hampers to 150 Nigerians that are badly affected by the pandemic lockdown too”.

The scribe of the Nigerian community in the Southern African country, assured that the Nigerian community in Botswana would continue to collaborate with government of their host country in all ramifications.

“We shall continue to do our best in collaborating with the Botswana Government in all ramification,” he assured.
