Managing Director and Chief Executive of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku on Monday allayed the fears of concessionaires and other users of Terminal 1 building of Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos, saying the facility is meant for renovation and not for demolition as erroneously portrayed in some quarters.
She added that eveey occupant would be adequately informed and provided with comfortable alternative accommodation before the commencement of the renovation which will be in phases.
Kuku made the clarification at 2025 FAAN’s Directorate of Commercial and Business Development (DCBD) Stakeholders’ Engagement Forum held at Sheraton Hotels, Lagos.
The FAAN’s Chief Executive who said that the facility would be given total renovation, insisted that the exercise would be in phases beginning with the departure section of the terminal.
“We will renovate the terminal but it will be a major renovation work,” Kuku affirmed. She continued “The plan is to renovate the terminal but it will be phased.”
Though, Kuku declared that the renovation of the terminal is a top priority to the management, she however, said, “but we are yet to get approvals.”
Kuku also announced that the contract for the new master plans of Lagos and Abuja airports had already been awarded.
Corroborating the Managing Director’s statement on the proposed renovation of the Terminal 1 building, FAAN’s Director of Airport Operations, Capt. Abdullahi Mahmood explained that stages of the renovation plan would involve getting approvals from the Federal Ministry of Aviation & Aerospace Development, setting up a FAAN committee on the project before commencement and among other issues.
He disclosed that some brand new equipment such as conveyor belts, jet bridges and others for the renovation work had already arrived the country.
In her welcome address, at the forun with the theme: Strengthening Partnerships For Sustainable Growth & Development, FAAN’s Director of Commercial & Business Development, Mrs. Adebola Joy Agunbiade said the Forum aims to strengthen stakeholders’ “collective efforts to create a more efficient and business friendly airport environment.”
She however hinted that FAAN is making some adjustments in its concession policies.
She disclosed that the Airport Authority is fully mobilised to improve on its non aeronautical revenue generation and collection.
She therefore, urged concessionaires to show understanding and respond promptly.
Agunbiade told the concessionaires that FAAN has done away with cash collection at any of its revenue point nationwide. She said that transactions are to be made through the use of cards.
She also informed that FAAN has introduced a platform where chartered flights coming into Nigeria have to make their payments online before coming to the country.
On the transportation system at FAAN’S managed airports, the Director informed that new categories of car hire services will be introduced to complement the existing ones.
She said CNG and electric cars are to be introduced to operate car hire services at the airports.
