As part of the activities to mark this year’s edition of Aviation Health week programme, management, staff of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and other members of the aviation community at Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport Ibadan, Oyo State, have been counselled on the importance of health monitoring.
They were counselled during health talks and medical services designed to promote health awareness and inspire individuals to prioritize their health and well-being as industry celebrate the annual Aviation Health Week.
In his opening remarks at the programme with the theme, “Soar to New Heights with Good Health”, held between June 26 and 27, 2024 at the Ibadan Airport, the Acting Airport Manager Mr. Francis Balogun who welcomed everyone to the event, stressed the importance of health monitoring.
Also the head of the Medical Department Mrs. M.C. Atere who underscored the significance of the ongoing health week, emphasised that regular medical checkups should be a priority for everyone.
In his contributions to the important topic, Dr. Okeya delivered an impactful session focusing on kidney health, covering several essential topics such as the adverse effects of energy drinks on kidney function, the impact of various drugs on kidney health, the differences between liver and kidney functions, and dietary recommendations for individuals with high blood pressure.
Key takeaways included the significant risks posed by energy drinks due to their high caffeine and sugar content, the management of kidney stones through surgical or natural methods, and the distinct and vital roles of the kidney and liver in the body.
On the current national health challenge in the country, Nurse Olapoju Olawale provided a detailed overview of cholera; discussing its definition and symptoms, causes and risk factors, diagnostic methods, and treatment options.
The presentation highlighted that cholera remains a communicable disease predominantly found in underdeveloped regions, with major risk factors including inadequate sanitation and contaminated food and water.
Symptoms of cholera, according to Olawale, include severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, and leg cramps.
The nurse however informed the gathering that Cholera is not a death certificate as effective treatment involves hospitalization, oral rehydration solutions (ORS), antibiotics, and stringent hygiene practices.
on June 26, Dr Cletus Ogoh delivered a lecture on eye care. He emphasized on the importance of eye health, he highlighted the impact of advancements in eye care, and also encouraged regular check-ups and protective measures.
The Aviation Health Week 2024 was concluded with free medical check-ups for all attendees, including blood sugar level checks, temperature checks, and blood pressure measurements and eye tests.
